I first started editing with Final Cut Pro, working on a nightly minute long programme called "iWitness", which reflected on personal faith in everyday life. That included a 7 second title & 3 second outro page, so I learnt to condense a story in 51 seconds.... (co-incidentally, this paragraph is 51 words...!)
As well as editing iWitness for RTÉ, I also began editing longer programmes, and pieces, both for work, and on a personal level. I found it much more enjoyable to let a person share their story over a few minutes rather than a few seconds.
Currently I edit across a variety of NLE's, from FCPX to Premiere to DaVinci Resolve. I'm also enjoying working editing footage from phone on apps such as VN & iMovie. Having started work in the era of tape, I love the fact that I can now film what I want where I want and cut it together just a few minutes later!
There's a small selection of some of my edits down below, including the first day of Sligo Jazz 2023 and a 2022 trip the to UK, both primarily filmed on my phone. There's also an interview piece which was requested at short notice after Sligo Jazz, shot on a Monday evening and ready for viewing the next evening. Further down, you'll find a long form (38min) documentary I filmed whilst traveling across Belgium with a group of African nuns who were following in the footsteps of their congregation's founder.
